PVC material continues to be a greatly used material due to its
longevity, durability and low maintenance. However, research threatens
its huge popularity with the discovery that that some lead-based PVC
formulations
can over time, turn pink in colour.
The results of three separate research projects into the cause of 'pinking' - the term applied to this discolouration phenomenon -were presented at a meeting of the British Plastics Federation. All independent findings suggested that pinking only occurred in window profile and cellular pvc containing lead.
Although experts disagree on the detail of what causes 'pinking', what they do agree on, however, is the following:
In Europe projects are ongoing to reduce the use of dangerous substances and in particular of lead with some countries like Denmark banning lead in pvc windows, favouring alternative friendlier stabilisers such as calcium zinc and tin. The UK however has fallen behind Europe which is already in the later stages of phasing out lead stabilised pvc. Although these alternative stabilisers have their critics, they are undoubtedly preferable to lead, as demonstrated in the US market where manufacturers there totally reject lead formulations and where there appears to be no reports of 'pinking'.
Traditionally, the main issue with removing lead stabilisers from PVC was the cost involved. CMS however, offer a superior, 100% lead free profile at NO EXTRA COST to the customer. This means many manufacturers continue regardless to the dangers of using lead in the production of PVC. At CMS Enviro Systems we have a strong commitment to the environment and have long since embraced the alternative to lead stabilisers as we acknowledge the superior weathering characteristics of non-lead formulations.
Despite the issue of 'pinking' many manufacturers continue to produce the cheapest product, but many consumers now want a product they know will perform not only on a long term basis but one which is both environmentally friendly and which protects the consumers' interests. That's why CMS Enviro Systems are committed to 100% lead free PVC production and why we guarantee our PVC products will never suffer from 'pinking'.
